I’m Palestinian, from Bethlehem and Jerusalem. I’m a producer, whose films have won more than 50 awards; still, getting Palestinian stories on screen, without stereotypes, has been a challenge. October 2023 felt like a match re-igniting a battle for justice that had been relegated to the backburner – on the news, in all of our busy lives. I had to do something.
The Enlightenment Podcast was my initial contribution; a way to get pro-Palestinian stories out there. I started by talking about my Nakba-survivor mother and my family’s experiences in the West Bank. Soon, we attracted some incredible guests, from best-selling novelist Susan Abulhawa, to activist Ahed Tamimi; from genocide experts Raz Segal and Omer Bartov, to historian Avi Schlaim, to Oscar-nominated filmmaker Annemarie Jacir.
As I listened, and learned and read and researched, I began looking past the propaganda to uncover the true story of how Palestine lost its freedom, and why. There was a true story here, stranger than any fiction.
Palestine Revealed is that story.
I am not a historian, or a journalist. I am a film producer, podcaster and Palestinian whose family has lived experience of life under occupation. The book has been well-researched and cited. What I hope it does is reveal the lies sold to us by our governments and media; and also the truth about Palestine; the honour, integrity and steadfastness of a people who have suffered too much, but retain the best of what it means to be human. The world has woken up. Gaza has crystallised a truth; that the institutions claiming to defend freedom were always about suppressing it.
